About Shot for Shot

Last updated: September 17, 2026

Shot for Shot is a head-to-head comparison site for home espresso machines. Every comparison puts two machines in the ring and scores them round by round — no vague "top 10" lists, no sponsored winners, no jargon left unexplained. We also publish the second lane of the hobby: mod and upgrade guides for machines like the Gaggia Classic, where enthusiast search meets real commercial intent.

Our methodology

We're upfront about what our scores are and aren't. Our reviews are research-based: we work from manufacturers' published specifications and manuals, plus long-term discussion in the owner and modding communities — people who have lived with these machines for years. We do not claim in-lab or hands-on test results we haven't produced, and every review says so plainly.

Each head-to-head is scored in the same categories, 10 points per round:

  1. Out-of-box ease. How fast does a beginner get to good shots? Grinder included, warm-up time, forgiveness of technique.
  2. Espresso control. How much can a skilled user dial in? Portafilter standard, pressure behavior, basket and accessory ecosystem.
  3. Milk steaming. Wand power and forgiveness — the most underrated daily-use spec.
  4. Build & longevity. Serviceability, parts availability, and the documented lifespan owners report.
  5. Footprint. Real counter space, including the grinder you'll need beside machines that don't have one built in.
  6. Modding ceiling. How far the machine can grow with you — documented mods, parts ecosystem, community knowledge.

Scores are structured editorial judgment, not lab measurement. We show our work on every page so you can disagree with a round and still trust the fight.

What we won't do

  • Invent test results, prices, or specifications. If a number isn't from the manufacturer or well-documented community consensus, we don't print it.
  • Publish prices. They change constantly; we link to the retailer's live price instead.
  • Let commissions influence scores. Full affiliate disclosure here.

Re-checks and updates

Machines get revised, specs change, and new models arrive. We re-check spec sheets regularly, and every page shows its last-reviewed date. If a machine changes, our scores change.

Editorial independence

We earn money through affiliate commissions (full disclosure here), but commissions never influence scores or rankings. Companies don't preview our reviews, don't pay for placement, and don't see verdicts before publication. If a machine's milk wand is weak, we say so — even if it pays us.

Who runs this

Shot for Shot is run by a small independent editorial team of home-espresso obsessives — the kind of people who have opinions about shower screens. We research every machine from specs, manuals, and the owner community, and we correct our mistakes in public.
